Youth Perceptions and Attitudes towards Road Safety in Serbia

Road traffic crashes are a leading cause of death for young people. Aberrant driver behaviors, such as drink driving, speeding, not wearing seatbelts, non-compliance with rules and aggressive key contributors to these crashes. Gender urban/rural differences also risk factors. In Serbia, where this study was conducted, well in most European countries, younger people have the highest road crash fatality risk. Thus, it is important understand only when behaviors occur, but attitudes surrounding them. The latter will provide an avenue intervention. To address this, mixed design using quantitative survey, focus groups in-depth interviews safety (aged 16–25) Serbia. Results across all methods showed that perceptions regarding differ gender location (urban/rural). Young drivers reported frequent engagement alcohol-impaired non-using seatbelts mobile phones while driving. Dominant underlying related lower perceived lack enforcements. These results show support education campaigns improving risky behavior drivers.
